    Getting married in Ukraine

Hello all. I am seriously contemplating marrying my girlfriend while I am in Ukraine visiting her. She is Ukrainian and has a 7 year old son. I met her there while in the Military. I will be visiting her in October, and would like to get married then. What do I need to do to facilitate this? after we have wed, what is the next step in getting her and her son to the United States? Any help would be appreciated. lastly We will be living in Atlanta. Where are places she can go, and people she can meet that will make her transition to the USA a bit easier? :)

So when you say "seriously contemplating" are you implying that there is a chance I can talk you out of making a horrible mistake?? "It's not me, it's you..."

I am certain there is an expectation period involved after you apply for a marriage license, it is probably somewhere around two weeks. Once you get married, grab the license and your wife and visit the nearest American consulate, they'll explain to you everything you need to do.

lol Minime, is there any hope for you and me? You may be the answer to helping me out of my Russian-induced depressian? Why does anybody need to fly half-way around the world to marry somebody with a kid? Yeah, I suppose it could be the real deal (true love). But I'd like to pressure-test his thinking before he puts himself through so much trouble. I'll try to be nice about it. "It's not me, it's you..."

As far as I know, K1 visa works faster then marriage. The USCIS website should give you some info.

I can't resist asking a few questions: Why is a woman in Ukraine better than ALL the women you could possibly date here. Women that won't have to 'adjust' to the new lifestyle. Are you sure she has been completely honest with you? Did anything not ring true? Dude, you are the world's biggest lottery ticket when it comes to going over there and bringing her back here to the Land of Milk and Honey. Don't you think a woman would say anything to get you to bring her here? If she were already here in the USA, do you really think she would give you the time of day? Russian women may not like to brag, but they do seem to have a high opinion of themselves and what they deserve from a man. She may be so appreciative of getting over here that she sticks with you, but I hope you are not getting used like a tool. Anyway, I wish you luck. It certainly is romantic dating women from other countries. I enjoy that too. But be prepared to start bringing over her whole family. Basically, you are not gonna have any kind of 'relationship honeymoon'. It's gonna be nothing but work. Hopefully she will appreciate it. "Tell me your dreams..."

Imagine - you are a poor struggling Ukranian girl with bad teeth on one day, and then the next day you have a big strong American man helping with the housework, helping raise your child, and paying for the dentist bills. Not to mention, the shopping spree's, nice restaurants, designer clothes, and new car. milk and honey baby, it's like winning the lottery. Man, it's great to be American. "It's not me, it's you..."

well, you can fix the dental issues while waiting aforementioned 2 weeks. (much cheaper; decent quality) 1. the consulate will do a full background check and full physical I believe just to make certain the women you are getting is in generally good health 2. if it does not work out it comes with about 2 y satisfaction guarantee - that is before GC is ready if you are not happy for any reason send her back (divorce) and pay nothing in terms of alimony. Given all that its much better deal then marrying a local women, is not it the case?

Sure I did. Not that she appreciated it. I'm not talking in theory here. Now that I'm old and bitter I'm not sure I would do it again. related: Men doing more; women doing less - Housework USA Today (Society for the Advancement of Education), Dec, 2002 American men are doing about 16 hours of housework a week, up from 12 hours in 1965, according to a study by the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research (ISR), Ann Arbor. The weekly housework hours of American women have declined sharply since 1965. Yet, they are still doing much more housework than men--about 27 hours a week. [27 hours a week sounds very high to me - that must be the women that actually do a good job housekeeping - plenty of piglets don't spend nearly this much time] "It's not me, it's you..."
