...get taste of local food and wine. This is my type of laid back vacation ;)

    Sergey,

Why did you stop posting your recipes and photos of your meals?  I enjoyed that.

My in-laws arrived from Russia. They're cooking now. By the way when I said "RUN" I knew what I was talking about. Where's that bottle of Vodka... ;)

:D  Hide extra vodka in the garage.  That's what my best friend does when his mother and grandmother come to stay for a few days.  Then he takes the trash out the garage really, really often.  ;)

Hot vodka straight from the bottle? Shock therapy at its best.

He has a chest freezer in the garage.  Not shock therapy, just therapy.

Or perhaps when they arrive for Christmas vodka can be kept reasonably chilled in the garage on the shelf behind rat poison. I hide my stuff in the basement instead. Including myself. I have all I need there for a few days stay without need of getting up to the surface. I even have my camping tent there and plastic Chritstmas tree beside.

chateau Elan is indeed the worst wine I've ever had the displeasure of tasting.  BUT, it's a great place to visit if you are on I-85 you have to stop there, just to enjoy the absurdity of finding a French resort in the middle of Hick Georgia.  It's a lot like Helen, Georgia (the Fake Bavaria of Redneck-ville) - a must see though it leaves you feeling a bit dirly (like Vegas).

I like Helen. It is nice place to walk around.

Does anyone know where is good beer in Helen? The most German beer you can find in local restaurants is Grolsh. Rest of beers is Bud-crap. There must be good beer there somewhere.

That winery in Helen is same level as Elan's. Tourist trap.

Sorry to interfere, the general topic is way beyond my area of expertise, but this got my attention..

My favorite German beer is Spaten.  They have it in Helen, but it can also be found very rarely in Harry's Farmers market, and i've actually seen it in liquor stores if i am lucky.

Taste is somewhat similar to Bavaria.

There is nothing French about Chateau Elan- besides its name- it is just a hotel next to I-85 with some towers attached to it. If you think it resembles France or anything French- I am sorry.... Nice hotel though-restaurants and a spa-you can find all these in Atlanta with a lot more choices.....Agree, whatever they make cannot be called wine in general.

Spaten used to be my favorite about 5 years ago. I see Spaten everywhere. But if I can buy Spaten here why do I need to go to Helen? I think Helen is gold mine for microbrewery enterprise. But none exists there as far as I know.

ok, ok, even i've seen it at Kroger.  But i cannot find a store that always has it Big Smile  and when i do find it in Atl, it only comes in 6-packs, and there are like 2 on the shelf.  That's not even enough to get home.

Re: Relatives visiting USA from Ukraine for first time

Okay, I've added Helen to my list of places to go, beer notwithstanding.   Been tubing there,  nothing but a neck ache from having to hold my head up from the innertube.   But maybe interesting for Ukrainian relatives, i don't know if they have that kind of thing over there.   What about Amicalola Falls?   Unicoi Lodge?   Dahlonega?  Think the gold mining will help?     What about anything in Alabama?   How about Biloxi, MS and the gambling?

I Need to finish this fast,  relatives arriving on 20th.   Took Sergey's advice and hid bottle of vodka in cooler next to pool.  Not currently a drinking man, but who knows?

Re: Relatives visiting USA from Ukraine for first time

Sidenote,   our relative got a better deal on the tickets from delta than I could get on ANY web site or even calling Delta direct.   lowest I got was $946 per person from Kiev to Atl with stop in New York.   He got 900 each and 800 for his kid.  I couldn't even get Delta to talk to me about a child discount.  (She is 8).   He used some internet service available in Ukraine.  Don't know what this service is but his confirmation ticket said  info@kruiz.cv.ua    must be one hell of a good web site.

Re: Relatives visiting USA from Ukraine for first time

First I have to defend my favorite French chateau:  Chateau Elan is a true 16th century provincial country resort, with the typical french pitch roof.  The grapes varietals are of French origin, adn the winemakers come from Franch.  There is a French style Spa, where sexy French girls give French manicures.  The owner of the chateau is a French motor-racing enthusiast, and onwner of the American Le Mans racing club.  Mon dieu, go to one of the french-named rooms, si c'etaient desormais francais il serait en France.

MK - let me tell you a first class beach vacation to head to:  Destin.  An authentic (lol) fishing village turned resort that is 6.5 hours drive from Atlanta.  I recommend y'all stay at the HIlton there.  there is only one 5-star restaurant down there called Cigar.  If you want to impress the family, spend the day on teh blinding sugar white sands of San Destin, lounge around the pool at the Hilton, and meander around the yacht harbor and malls in the area.  You can't go wrong hanging out in Destin/San Destin.

Of course, if Chateau Elan and the High aren't good enough you can skip Atlanta all together and go to the Met in NY, and maybe spend a few days in Monaco.  Why slum around here....
