TIME's
Person of the Year is a clear-eyed recognition of the world as it is
and of the most powerful individuals and forces shaping that world—for
better or for worse http://www.time.com/time/specials/2007/personoftheyear/article/0,28804,1690753_1690757,00.html

Mr. Gilstrap! Please do tell us what Russian president did to piss you off so much. PS And that's Ahmadinejad.

This thread is in sore need of an airhead opinion... At the very least, he's better looking than most other presidents :)

Re: Person of the Year 2007
Good choice. Bad Picture.
Remember, this is a very far left publication (for a mainstream one), and Putin's main beef (currently) is with US administration in power. Could easily have been those other guys mkgilstrap suggested, had they had as productive a year.
In other news, democratic candidates sound way more confrontational about Russia's "course". It would be The Weekly Standard kissing Russia's ass if Dems were in power.
This is just a media marketing ploy anyway. Or are there prizes?

Yeah, I also noticed some people intentionally try to misspell names to make some point, as if it is original or something.. A sign of mediocrity overall and just retarded, sorry :)

Actually, that's what they said too. Chavez and Ahma-whatever were seriously considered but like you said, they didn't have as "productive a year".

Re: Person of the Year 2007
I don't understand what the praise is all about, the picture is very bad, he looks like he is looking through a door peep hole (i think thats right in english, glazok koroche), but he is now in the same list as Hitler and Stalin, so how is this an honor?

"TIME's Person of the Year is not and never has been an honor. It is not
an endorsement. It is not a popularity contest. At its best, it is a
clear-eyed recognition of the world as it is and of the most powerful
individuals and forces shaping that world—for better or for worse. It
is ultimately about leadership—bold, earth-changing leadership. Putin
is not a boy scout. He is not a democrat in any way that the West would
define it. He is not a paragon of free speech. He stands, above all,
for stability—stability before freedom, stability before choice,
stability in a country that has hardly seen it for a hundred years.
Whether he becomes more like the man for whom his grandfather prepared
blinis—who himself was twice TIME's Person of the Year—or like Peter
the Great, the historical figure he most admires; whether he proves to
be a reformer or an autocrat who takes Russia back to an era of
repression—this we will know only over the next decade. At significant
cost to the principles and ideas that free nations prize, he has
performed an extraordinary feat of leadership in imposing stability on
a nation that has rarely known it and brought Russia back to the table
of world power. For that reason, Vladimir Putin is TIME's 2007 Person
of the Year." (Full article here.) As for the picture, the one they used on the home page (time.com) is even worse

Re: Person of the Year 2007
Dasha...can you now find the explanation of People Magazine's Sexiest Man Alive?!? I would really love to see that criteria ;) Let's remember that Time Magazine had Hilter as Man of the Year a long time ago - they nominate people based on power and achievement (good or bad).

Although I'm sure you didn't mean that literally, I got curious enough to google it so here it is: (excerpt taken from here) "We have our favorites. We look at who the readers want in the
magazine. There's a team of editors in New York that whittle it down"
over a period of about two months. "But there's always an obvious
choice. . . . It's the guy of the moment, the guy of the year."
The title was created almost randomly back in 1985 when editors were preparing a story on Mel Gibson. "Someone said, 'Oh my God, he is the sexiest man alive!' And someone said, 'You should use that as a cover line.' "

Re: Person of the Year 2007
Egor, One of my beefs with Dems in this country - they are far more idiotic in their position towards Russia. Reps, at least are more pragmatic, which makes them more flexible . Dems with their stupid "democracy" mantra are far more capable of nuking Russia or bankrolling 5th column
